In 2013, Alex Shaw published a small novel called The Cartographer’s Handbook, the first in a series called The New Century Multiverse. The premise is alt history, where post-Civil War America is suddenly overcome with a plague of dangerous monsters that overwhelm the Reconstruction, and bring the nation to its knees. The series is not about its fall, however, but about the heroes that help bring it back from the brink, and step into a wider world that is not the one they knew. New mysteries to unlock, magics to discover, and worlds to explore. Ten years later, the New Century Multiverse is now thirteen books strong, with more on the way. It has had 2 major story arcs, an Avengers style coming together of the heroes of its various books, and multiple worlds and genres to explore. This is its first fan podcast. Through The Wind Door is a deep dive exploration of the novels and their corresponding audiodramas, along with interviews of the cast and creators. Accessible to new readers and long time fans, join Greg and Toby as they share thoughts about this engaging series.

We've made it to the end of the 5th book. One more to go before we can look back on Phase 1 of New century as a whole, but coming to an end, always makes us reflect on what has been. What this ending means in context with the other endings. What new beginnings will spring from it.
We wanted to discuss this story from the perspective of classical tragedy, and so we do. But we also question if it really fits, given the greater context of what kind of tragedy this is. How in some ways it is too real, too raw, too modern for us to view at a remove, as purely fiction.
There is a certain poetic asynchronous feel to the fact that even though we've already covered so much New Century that this feels like a strange midpoint in the story. Steamheart, of course, will be huge and wide spanning. But it also makes sense if we put it in the right context. Secret Rooms was A New Hope , Arlington is The Empire Strikes Back, and Steamheart is the Return of the Jedi. Let Them Go - after all - is a separate prologue to the world, not this story. And Tiger's Eye, as wonderful as it is, is it's own self contained narrative that will just happen to be relevant to Steamheart.
All this and more we will discuss, in our last three shows on Arlington.
