In 2013, Alex Shaw published a small novel called The Cartographer’s Handbook, the first in a series called The New Century Multiverse. The premise is alt history, where post-Civil War America is suddenly overcome with a plague of dangerous monsters that overwhelm the Reconstruction, and bring the nation to its knees. The series is not about its fall, however, but about the heroes that help bring it back from the brink, and step into a wider world that is not the one they knew. New mysteries to unlock, magics to discover, and worlds to explore. Ten years later, the New Century Multiverse is now thirteen books strong, with more on the way. It has had 2 major story arcs, an Avengers style coming together of the heroes of its various books, and multiple worlds and genres to explore. This is its first fan podcast. Through The Wind Door is a deep dive exploration of the novels and their corresponding audiodramas, along with interviews of the cast and creators. Accessible to new readers and long time fans, join Greg and Toby as they share thoughts about this engaging series.

Not only is this even more conversation with Recorded Tomorrow host Jesse Ferguson, we even do some time travelling!
...okay, not really. I do share outtakes at the end at different points in our conversation, so that's kind of like time travelling.
...No? Okay then.
But we do talk about how Jesse likes to explain time travel in BITAS and other creative works, what's next for him on the creative front... and most importantly, we ask about Bishop Miller from Arlington. Come join us.

This is Whitescarves Team-Up, Fireside Alliance edition.
Alex deserves full credit for this one. As mentioned recently, Through The Wind Door is part of a super community of creators, and there had already been discussion on how to do crossover episodes among the different podcasts. But given that Back in Time + Space had just come out, Alex suggested that the time was ripe to interview him for that, so everything just fits neatly together!
So if you like time travel and New Century, get you an interview that can do both. Not to mention that unlike our News of the Century on the book, both parts of this interview are spoiler free. Enjoy as we get into the history of Jesse's love of time travel, his growing relationship with Alex and his various creative works, and the birth of Recorded Tomorrow.

Whitescarves Team-Up! #7, Maureen Foley Pt. 2
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
This was normally going to wait till my new regular upload time of midnight, Saturday. But once more, I just couldn't hold back the signal.
Part 1 with Maureen was much more high energy in general, a bunch of dorks connecting over this piece of media we loved and participated in. Part 2 is more sobering, going to more difficult places. Talking about our experiences during the last year, and about the internal struggles since 2016 that led Maureen to start stepping back from being a regular cast member of New Century.
I do think we do a good job of rounding out our questions, and giving Maureen a chance to revisit her role in shaping New Century, as she ponders what is next for her. But more important is the surprise ending of this episode, and one that is resonant with the stories we have covered. The importance of finding hope in the storm, and holding fast to it.
We end as we mean to go on. Together.

Whitescarves Team-Up! #7, Maureen Foley Pt. 1

"[Greta] was not of this world. But also, she was of this world. She was a grounded character, but there was something so... like you could feel her weight but you couldn't touch her. She was so real to me because she was so... like what I had imagined some things that I heard about from my ex and her family history. And I sort of brought that into Greta to give her some grounding in the reality of it. And then, bearing in mind that she was really untouchable. It's a hard way to describe it, but she was a hard character to describe. [laughs]" - Maureen
This is not quite us completing our set of interviews, because even now, Alex is adding more people to his indomitable voice cast. But Maureen is the last of the originals, and man, does she bring a powerful and varied story with her.
We make our way through the potent women that she gives voice to, starting with Tabitha Chorley, discovering the hidden depths of Greta. Touching on the importance of our purple tiger to Maureen (which she has already spoken most eloquently on in Episode 20A), and from there, diving into the yet undiscussed personal elements of voicing Sarah Arlington, and the way she struggled with Merlene.
As always, past is prologue, and we get into that too. You won't want to miss this one, Whitescarves.

Whitescarves Team-Up! #6, Pt. 2 - Spencer Leeb

"Hakka is ultimately- he's a kid. Like, in a way that a lot of adults secretly are. Especially at the age I kind of was when I was reading him. There's a lot of people who don't mature past a certain point, and fortunately got the opportunity to do so. But he- he very much thinks he's an adult. He thinks he's the shaman of the tribe. Much like Baltus: 'i'm this important pillar'. But the difference between him and Baltus is that Baltus believes that despite all the evidence to the contrary. Whereas Hakka is almost the other way around." - Spencer
Part 2 of our glorious interview with Spencer. But as per the in joke of this episode, I have only two words to describe it:
"Hoof hands."
Enjoy.

"With all loss, almost all grief, all pain... this isn't a question of if you can. It's whether you really think it's worth doing it. Because you will keep going. Almost whether you like it or not." - Spencer, talking about coping in the aftermath of tragedy and trauma.
This is the day you've waited for, where we finally interview the noteworthiest of Nags, Spencer Leeb.
As with all our other New Century voice actors, we grill him on his origins, and discover he has a performative past. We get in deep discussing his longest running character, Frank Butler, and discuss Spencer's tendencies towards playing various kinds of soldiers. Comparing and contrasting them all, especially those new audiences are most familiar with, Rafe and Butler.
We also get into the antagonistic Baltus, and have some deep, serious conversations about running themes within his characters. There's laughs and sobering seriousness. And that's only the beginning, with even more conversation hot on it's heels.

Whitescarves Team-Up! #5 - Matt Wardle, Part 2
Friday Oct 30, 2020
Friday Oct 30, 2020
"We've all got things in our past in one way shape or form where we go 'I wish I wouldna done that'. So, there's no reason to not change some of those behaviors going forward... that's just my pie in the sky idealism that I have now and then. So take that for what you will." - Matt
Round 2 of Matt Wardle. If you thought we went off topic when interviewing Laureta or Maya, be prepared, because we wander all over the place above and beyond New Century. We discuss furry fandom, cosplay, what it means to be a roleplayer, Massachusetts, all accents devolving into Russian, and how humbling it can be to be a performer that has touched others. We also discuss living with separated parents, and the affect parents have on our kids whether they intend to or not. (No special content warning, but it can get personal and heavy at times.)
But in terms of New Century itself, we cover the familiar ground of discussing which of his characters would have interesting interactions with other New Century personalities that have not yet met, as well as who Matt himself would most be interested in having a heart to heart conversation with. The answer may surprise you!
Also, let Alex know if you want to see a Tesla/Edison spinoff show!
(Extra long outtakes reel at the end - there was a lot of good content pre and post podcast!)

(With regards to changing ones voice enough to dissapear into roles) "When someone says 'I had no idea that was you', that's about the best thing I think anybody can give me as praise... and honestly, that's just about made my day!!!! - Matt
It's time for one of the most animated members of New Century's cast to come to the mike. Matt Wardle talks about how he came to work with Alex, how his real life experience with caretaking for a disabled partner plays into some of his voice work, and his love of playing villains.
There is a lot of frank discussion on real world stuff like living with disability, living life with high empathy and expression of feelings. But with all of the serious heartfelt stuff some a lot of fun digression. We learn more about what went into the acting out of Jeremy Pines, Oberon the Akka, Krieger, and one of our favorite people to hate on so far in New Century, Mayor Caleb Buck. We discuss the tribulations of accents in voice acting, as well as sublimating our own natural tendencies in order to fit or even dissapear into a character.
Also Matt may have ESP? Because he keeps on anticipating what we are going to ask next without having a copy of our interview outline...
